FUSEE Gives Reality Check at the Oregon Resilience Summit

FUSEE participated in a special gathering of wildfire survivors and disaster recovery groups attending the Oregon Resilience Summit. Over 100 people from communities that were devastated by the 2020 Labor Day firestorms in western Oregon gathered in Sunriver, Oregon May 15-17. It was a remarkable exchange of information and emotion from residents, local government agency representatives, and nonprofit groups sharing stories of the traumatic experience, and the long, slow, painful recovery from wildfire disasters that is still unfolding. 

FUSEE was invited to give a presentation to the gathering. We raised awareness about the many factors that are impacting wildland firefighters' mental health: the stress that comes from lack of a living wage, health care, affordable housing, and long absences away from family and friends with lengthening wildfire seasons. Next to the trauma of witnessing serious injuries or deaths of crewmembers, nothing causes more distress among firefighters than seeing homes burn to ashes. Rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PSTD) are rising among wildland firefighters; in fact, firefighters can be viewed as another kind of wildfire "survivor." 

FUSEE advocates an end to knowingly futile "performative firefighting" actions in remote wildlands during severe weather conditions where suppression is ineffective or causes more harm than good. Instead, crews should be more selectively and strategically dispatched to fires that imminently threaten communities, and assigned tasks that have high probability of success. The audience was very receptive to our message--the feeling of a shared empathy in the room was powerful. Ultimately, what is needed is a partnership between wildland firefighters and the citizens they serve in proactive community fire preparation. June Update on FUSEE's Advocacy Campaign to Shape the Northwest Forest Plan Amendment

The Northwest Forest Plan Amendment (NWFP) will impact over 24 million acres across 17 national forests in Oregon, California, and Washington. This summer, the USFS will release a draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) with proposed amendments to this plan originally created in 1994. Check out FUSEE’s Story Map all about the NWFP to learn the details of this important policy. 

The USFS wants YOUR input on how these lands, your public lands, should be managed. FUSEE is working to support you in having your values and your voices heard this summer.

πŸ“½οΈJuly 23: Come watch the Crown Jewels documentary release in Eugene, OR at the new Art House Theatre at 7:00pm. This film was created by famous environmental influencer, Alex Haraus, and FUSEE is honored to be featured in the film. 

The film will be followed by an opportunity to write NWFP comments and a Q&A for the panelists that are starring in the film! You won’t want to miss this.

🎸August 14: Be a part of Foliage Fest: Summer Concert for Protecting our Forests. In partnership with Oregon Wild and Cascadia Wildlands, FUSEE is hosting a family-friendly summer concert in the park where you can make your voice heard through writing public comments, eat free pizza, jam out to some famous local bands, and create beautiful forest art at our family art activity stations.

FUSEE’s Executive Director will be at the final Federal Advisory Committee (FAC) meeting in Washington. Stay tuned for more insider updates as we get closer to the DEIS release date! 

We can’t wait to work with you to bring more Tribal inclusion and fire inclusion into our national forests.

FUSEE Welcomes Two Summer Interns

Zakary Christen-Cooney (he/him) is an advertising major at the University of Oregon. For the past year, he worked as a multimedia/photography intern for the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon where he continues to hone videography, photography, and social media strategy skills.

Zakary is thrilled to be starting this position at FUSEE because he believes that working for a non-profit will be very rewarding. He’s excited to learn more about how media strategy is for a non-profit. In his personal life, Zakary loves doing videography for local bands! He also has an adorable goldendoodle named Lucy-Lou.

Zakary is FUSEE’s Social and Digital Media Intern. He will primarily create media plans and update and manage our Instagram and Facebook pages with his videography, photography, and editing skills.

Arielle Gardner (she/they) is PNW homegrown, growing up off the coast of the Puget Sound. Since moving to Eugene seven years ago, they have worked as a raft guide, wildland firefighter, and a conservation and outdoor school teacher. Their hobbies are many including mountain biking, rock climbing, making trash into art, pottery, home-brewing and laughing! If you want to strike up a conversation with Arielle, hot topics include asking them about their dog Tracker, or how to start an at-home worm compost bin.

Arielle is FUSEE’s Development and Community Engagement Intern. Arielle will gain skills in nonprofit development, including fundraising, event planning, outreach and community engagement.

We are excited to have Zakary and Arielle on the FUSEE crew this summer!
